NEUROCIRCUIT’s approach to concussion management is based on the understanding that a concussion is a brain injury that causes changes in the way the brain functions. It can occur from a direct blow to the head, face or neck or a jolt to the body which causes the brain to bounce within the skull damaging the cells and cell membranes. This leads to an abnormal movement of calcium, sodium, potassium and other substances. The changes in the composition of the cells can affect the way that they function. As a result of the injury, there is also a decrease in blood flow to the injured area of the brain which consequently limits the amount of glucose supplied. The injured areas demand fuel in order to repair themselves. The process is lengthened by the limited supply of glucose available and the increased demand and typically takes 7-14 days.
