When it doubt sit it out

I’m sure you’ve all heard it by now: “when it doubt, sit it out”. The research is conclusive; playing with a concussion will slow the recovery process, can have irreversible long term consequences and in extreme cases could result in paralysis or death. Despite the warnings, athletes continue to hide their symptoms from coaches, parents, medical staff and friends.

Why wouldn’t they come forward? Have they not seen the research? Don’t they care about their futures? Do they think they are invincible?

Athletes are programmed to do whatever it takes for their team to win. To leave it all on the field, court or ice. To play through pain. To never give up.

Unlike a broken leg, concussions are an “invisible injury”. Takes a lot of courage to ask you coach to take you out of the game. And it’s arguably even harder to tell your teammates that you won’t be able to suit up for the next game.

Anyone who has ever missed a game knows how difficult it is. And though we can’t prevent concussions we can make it easier for our athletes to do the right thing. #WhenInDoubt #SitItOut#ConcussionCare #TrustTheProcess
